Minecraft (Java Edition)

The history of Minecraft, the most popular sandbox game ever, starts with the Java version, and it was initially called "cave game". Since its inception, Minecraft has been adapted to various platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch as the Bedrock Edition, with Minecraft Pocket Edition being the version for mobile devices.

The core of Minecraft merges endless building with blocks and open-world sandbox exploration, creating a game that offers several modes. This combination received widespread praise, earning it the accolade of being one of the greatest games of all time, even though developers never believed that it could be anything more than just one of the best indie games.

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Minecraft Bedrock Edition is the ported version of Minecraft, developed in the C++ coding language. This version has been released on multiple platforms including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC, offering the same engaging experience across all devices.

While it remains largely identical to the original resource management simulation game, there are some minor differences in game mechanics such as taming and tick speeds.

Despite these differences, the core premise remains unchanged, providing the same rich gameplay experience. A notable addition in the Bedrock Edition is the enhanced multiplayer mode compatibility, making it easier for players to connect and enjoy the game together.

Minecraft Story Mode

Minecraft Story Mode takes players on a distinct journey from the classic Minecraft experience, employing a point-and-click interface alongside periodic interludes of arcade-style gameplay for mini-games, guiding players through its narrative. This storytelling approach draws inspiration from other Telltale game releases, such as The Last Of Us, emphasizing a narrative-driven experience.

While Minecraft Story Mode incorporates building elements characteristic of the Minecraft series, it distinguishes itself as an interactive story or comic book adventure. Players are introduced to a main character and various plot lines, creating a structured narrative path to follow, which contrasts with the open-ended, sandbox nature of classic Minecraft.

Minecraft Earth

Minecraft Earth was an innovative sandbox, augmented-reality spinoff of the iconic Minecraft game, designed specifically for iOS and Android mobile devices. It was made available to players free of charge, bringing the cherished Minecraft experience into the real world.

At its core, Minecraft Earth retained the essential elements that define Minecraft—building, mining, and exploring. The game introduced two primary modes: ‘build mode’ and ‘play mode,’ enabling players and their friends to collaboratively build and explore their creations in real-time within their physical environment.

While it didn’t feature the traditional survival mode and adventure mode, it successfully incorporated a multiplayer mode, allowing for collaborative and interactive gameplay experiences.

Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Dungeons stands out as a distinct departure from the traditional Minecraft series, primarily due to its limited, point-and-click hack-and-slash gameplay. Unlike the open-ended sandbox experience that Minecraft is known for, Minecraft Dungeons introduces players to generated Minecraft dungeons that they must navigate through.

It was launched on various platforms, including Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation, broadening its accessibility to gamers across different devices. The dungeon crawler gameplay and isometric styling of Minecraft Dungeons have elicited a mixed response from the gaming community.

Some players have praised its design and engaging gameplay mechanics, appreciating the fresh take on the Minecraft universe. However, others have criticized the game for its procedurally generated dungeons and perceived lack of replayability, pointing out that these aspects might not appeal to all players.

Scrolls / Caller's Bane

Caller's Bane (originally known as Scrolls) is a turn-based strategy digital collectible card game, developed in 2014. What I love about it is that it's still available on Windows, Mac, and Android devices for free, and unlike many free games, this one is actually quite cool.

Crafted with the Unity game engine by Jakob Porser, Caller's Bane aimed to bridge a gap in the collectible card games market, especially by incorporating multiplayer online elements.

The game's launch sparked controversy, initially named ‘Scrolls’ (alluding to the cards players collect and use during gameplay), which drew attention from The
Elder Scrolls
series developers and publishers, Zenimax Studios. As you might expect, this led to a lawsuit against Mojang Studios, culminating in the game's release under the new title, Caller's Bane.

Crown and Council

Developed by Mojang employee Henrik Pettersson, Crown and Council was another big surprise from the studio when it was released on Steam in 2016.

Crown and Council is basically an action strategy game that revolves around the concept of conquering opposing cities and kingdoms through the acquisition of ‘tiles’. These tiles can be strategically developed to strengthen the player's position in the game.

Cobalt

Mojang published this side-scrolling adventure action strategy game, developed by Oxeye game studio in 2016 as a release for Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Xbox 360, and Microsoft Xbox One.

The gameplay involves completing challenges or facing off opponents in deathmatches with thrown objects and weapons, which results in exciting multiplayer gameplay.

Cobalt received mixed, fairly average reviews on its release. Plus, from my experience, the game was pretty buggy during release, and many people gave up on it forever just because of this terrible first impression. But hey, I still like it more than some of all these new games, especially all these games based on comic books.

Cobalt WASD

Branching off of Cobalt 2016, Cobalt WASD simplified gameplay and enhanced one aspect of the action strategy game, leaning more into a storyline and giving players one of two options to play as the ‘Metalface’s or the ‘Protobot’s.

This game used the same principles as Cobalt 2016 did, being developed by Oxeye game studio and also released by Mojang, but this release concentrated on multiplier interaction and buying upgraded weapons with money won at the end of each game.
